Travis Adkins on Walter Koenig's BUCK ALICE AND THE ACTOR-ROBOT

Travis Adkins, author of Twilight of the Dead and After Twilight, shares his personal history with Walter Koenig's Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot in this essay/review.

I was the editor of [the new] edition of Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot, published by Permuted Press, specialist in the post-apocalyptic genre. It first saw a mass market paperback printing by Critics Choice in 1988, then a small revival by Coscom Entertainment in 2006, (with superb editing by Nicholas Grabowsky.) I write this review, not so much regarding editing this new iteration, but because Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot is one of my favorite books of all time.

A little backstory: I was a fairly advanced reader at an early age. I read (abridged, unfortunately, as it was the only version available at the time) Stephen King’s The Stand when in the sixth grade. Certainly that doesn’t mean my unfully developed mind comprehended it all at the time, but I knew what I was tasting in the text itself, and what’s more, I knew I liked it. Apocalyptic scenarios fascinated me. My mother, maybe not appreciating the literary road I was heading down, attempted to introduce me to her favorite genre, Sci-Fi, so she presented me with Buck Alice, (in all its mass market paperback glory, pulpy, yellowy, wonderfully smelly pages and all,) along with the goading concession, “It takes place after an apocalypse. Try it.”

I read it. I loved it.

There’s something to be said for how Buck Alice, piggybacking off of The Stand, shaped me in my formative years as an adult, but more directly as a writer and editor. But I don’t write this review purely out of sentimental reasons. As post-apocalyptic literature became more and more popular, and I read more and more of it, I did so with a certain degree of aloofness. All elements of a post-apoc novel, no matter how serious the tone, are present in Buck Alice.

The ashen, dirty ambiance you get in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road? Hey, I’ve seen that before. Try a landscape covered in the white dust of disintegrated human remains, and how it clings to the survivors who drudge through it. Are they dirty? Are they clean? Moreover, what do we say about a Jewish messiah who chooses to lie down in the dust, and emerges a glistening white man? Do we discuss in book clubs the sacrilegious nature of this trope, or do we disregard it because Buck Alice initially impresses itself upon you as satirical in nature?

How about the mass death of humanity by plague, seen in Mary Shelley’s The Last Man and in modern times in King’s The Stand? Hey, I’ve seen that before. The alien invaders, after wiping out humankind, suffer their own apocalypse in Buck Alice—a plague that hugely diminishes their numbers and enfeebles the survivors, so much so that they must evacuate their new colony. This is followed by the quintessential betrayal by the disillusioned Imhor, with a mentality and a logic not so far removed from Harold Lauder.

I’ll try to shorten my point: The surreal philosophizing of Radix? Check. War of the Worlds? Definitely check. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a hero, villain, scenario, landscape, motivation, or emotion that is not present in Buck Alice. Leonard Nimoy calls it “a wry and insightful look at human behavior after apocalypse.” While he’s not wrong, I’m more inclined to say “a brilliant critique of the post-apocalyptic genre.”

Here we have all that good stuff: power mongering, messiah complex developed during prolonged isolation, ultimate betrayal, the fallibility and insecurity of leaders. But here, in Buck Alice, these tropes are boiled down to their rudimentary cores. Was Koenig attempting to write a prophetic novel? Was he attempting to write such an insightful novel? I don’t know. He may have been writing it only for kicks, but it doesn’t matter.

Buck Alice shines a sometimes painful light on human behavior, and all your favorite heroes and all your favorite conniving villains are revealed much in the vein of the emperor’s new clothes: they’re not wearing any. Just how different is Randall Flagg from Buck Alice? Just how different is Courtney, the heroine in my novel Twilight of the Dead, from Joshua? Both are lucky survivors, attempting to make sense of their new world and trying to ground themselves in reality, oftentimes failing.

The bottom line is: Humans are silly. Human behavior after apocalypse is even sillier.

Maybe we’re all doomed.

Maybe we should start paying more attention to the books we write, and the books we read, and ask ourselves if we’re not acting like caricatures. Are our heroes really to be so respected? Are their motivations any different than those of a lunatic? And, worse, *gulp*, could our villains actually be right?

Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot makes me wonder that. If you’re a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, I recommend this book as your primer. It should go on your mantelpiece. At the very least, it should head your collection of Permuted Press novels.

In editing this book, I wanted to somehow pay respect to the fact that I was dissecting a classic work. Due to time (and sanity) constraints, I resisted footnoting and cross-referencing ala a Norton or Broadview. Instead I settled for subtitling each chapter in the style of Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. Somehow appropriate, I think.

So will you enjoy this book even if you don’t enjoy the deep thoughts or internal philosophizing? Yes, I think you will. It’s sustainable in and of itself, and entertaining on its own merits. It’s quite fun, and while some reviewers will argue that the book is just silly and random, I disagree.

It’s as serious and somber as you want it to be. And I think that is a reflection upon you, the reader, and your attitude toward and appreciation of post-apocalyptic literature.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk with us, Eric.

I guess the biggest thing for you now is December 2010. You have four books coming out, one of them being “War of the Worlds Plus Blood, Guts, and Zombies” to be released by Simon and Schuster. Tell us about them. Is there any order in which we should read these, any of them tied together?

Only two of the four are related. Those being The Human Experiment from Sonar 4 Publications and Anti-Heroes from Library of the Living Dead Press. Both of them feature my superhero Agent Death. The Human Experiment is his origin novel and Anti-Heroes is his second adventure where he battles zombies in North Carolina. The other book aside from War of the Worlds Plus Blood Guts and Zombies from Simon and Schuster is Martin Kier and the Dead. It's a sequel to the title novella in Permuted Press's Season of Rot. Martin Kier and the Dead picks up right where Season of Rot left off and pits Martin, a bio-engineered super soldier, against an entire city of zombies.

You have many books and anthology credits to your name, and in a short amount of time. How does it feel to have come so far and achieved so much?

I don't know. I am always looking ahead rather than back. I mean I still get down like every writer wondering if I have done enough or worrying if my books are moving enough but I try to lose myself in work rather than think about it. Currently, I am hard at work on my Bigfoot War trilogy which will be masterpiece of fan born fiction and something I have wanted to write since I picked up the pen.

I first heard of you when “How The West Went To Hell” was released by Pill Hill Press. You also did “Kinberra Down” with co-author Jessy Marie Roberts, which I was privileged to be a pre-reader for. How was co-authorship versus being the sole author of a novel? Is it something that you would do again?

It's something I do a LOT. Dr. Kim Paffenroth (Dying to Live, Gospel of the Living Dead) jokes with me a lot that I am the co-author of everything. I have done Anti-Heroes with David Dunwoody, Kinberra Down with Jessy Roberts, Barren Earth with Stephen North, Blood Rain with Gail Davis- it just goes on and on especially if you dig into my short fiction. I really enjoy working with others but overall I do prefer to work alone.

Speaking of “Kinberra Down”, I enjoyed it very much and want to know if there are more alien cats in the future?

I get asked to write more about that race cat aliens a good bit. At this time, I have no plans to explore them further. I love SF but I would much rather be writing zombies, superheroes, and Bigfoot.

You enjoy superhero things, Shakespeare, and watching “House”. Are these your escape from zombies or do they inspire characters and story scenes? (Great choice in watching “Castle”, too.)

Stargate Atlantis is my all time favorite show in existence. I LOVED it and mourn it everyday. My escape from writing is mostly comics. I read The Flash, Birds of Prey, Doom Patrol and The Legion of Superheroes monthly as well as any event storylines, TPBs, or other impulse buys that I stumble into at the comic shop. Comic shops and my wallet do NOT get along or perhaps it's that do get along too well. I have been a comic geek since age four and would give just about anything to write for DC Comics. And yes, sometimes comics do inspire me. I credit Weird War Tales as one of my very first exposures to horror that made me love it.

To quote you, “Zombies are the modern monster”. You believe they fit better into our current under crisis society than vampires and werewolves. Why?

They can represent so many things from the fear of losing one's identity to the fear of people in general in our overcrowded and crazy world to simply a fear of death. Zombies are often born of a virus and that just fits our current age perfectly.

You’ve mentioned two zombie types: Romero (scientifically generated) and Haitian types seen in “The Serpent and The Rainbow”. Do you have a preference or would you consider your zombies a different type entirely?

I HATE Haitian zombies. Can't stand them. To me, a Z tale isn't a Z tale if it's not about the end of the world and the fall of civilization.

In several previous interviews, the “Great Collaboration Novel” has been mentioned. Legally I can’t ask, by title, about this project we were both part of, but I would like to know how you felt about writing with 15 other authors. Would you consider ever taking on something that huge again?

It was fun and crazy. I would totally do it again. I am sure my military chapters threw some of the other writers for a loop but what can I say, I am military horror author in my soul.

You have a Best Of collection—“Unabridged, Unabashed, and Undead: The Best of Eric S. Brown. Is it available in print and ebook? I’d like to get a copy.

Yep, it's available in both print and Kindle on Amazon as well both formats at other retailers too. It's a collection of 47 zombie short stories from the early days of my career. It's got a bit of everything from traditional zombies to zombies battling superheroes to zombie chickens and even zombies in space.

You have now worked with several small press’ and a mainstream publisher. Do you have a preference? What do you find most beneficial in each of these? What is the single worst drawback?

Mainstream is better money but sometimes “indie” is more fun. It just depends on the project.

Once these four books are out in December, what is your most pressing project coming up next?

The Weaponer, my masterpiece in terms of crazy zombie fiction will soon be out from Coscom Entertainment. Peter Clines of Exheroes described it as “Shane” meets “Mad Max” in a zombie filled world after reading an advance copy. It's a post apocalyptic zombie western. Seriously. As to what I am working on, it's my Bigfoot War trilogy. I am trying to finish the second book now which will be much longer and perhaps even more original than the first.

What does your family think of all the hubbub you’ve stirred up with your zombies?

My family thinks it's pretty amazing actually. Many of them can remember when I was just a teenager who claimed he wanted to write someday. Now, they're like “Wow, look at how far you've come? You can walk down the street here and get recognized!” My wife believed in me before anyone else ever did and is seeing that faith realized. My five year old son often tells people “My daddy writes about zombies”. So everyone is very supportive and I am really blessed.

Interview: Author Brian P. Easton

Thank you, Brian, for talking to us today.

You’ve been a finalist with both of your novels (Autobiography of a Werewolf Hunter and Heart of Scars) for the Independent Publisher Book Awards. How did/does that make you feel?

Obviously, it feels good to have your work validated by people who judge books for a living. This isn’t your mother patting you on the back or your best friend saying he likes you’re stuff. To be judged by strangers and to have them award you for it was a very satisfying, very encouraging experience for me.

How does a son of a southern pastor turn to studying the occult? Which you’ve now done for over 20 years. What moved you in that direction?

I’ve always had an interest in the spiritual side of life, and growing up in church I witnessed several things that I’ll simply call, phenomena. These experiences prompted me around age 18 to do my own research into world religions, cults and their various supernatural-oriented traditions. The occult quickly became the primary focus of my studies, even though I don’t practice it.

You have a degree in anthropology, its purpose to help in your research. Did it help and in what ways?

My degree in Socio-cultural anthropology became an extension of my research, and a way of lending it some credibility. It helped expand my studies to include interviews with occult practitioners and to sit in with certain groups. The firsthand knowledge I obtained from those sessions is the kind of thing I just couldn’t get from books. As a writer of dark fiction, the things I learned during those years have been invaluable.

Anti-heroes aren’t always popular main characters, yet you’ve admitted you’re a sucker for them. Is there a personal story behind this?

I’m a part of the generation that made characters like Wolverine popular. We like our heroes with an edge, and many times with a certain flare previously reserved for the ‘bad guys.’ The hero vs. villain thing is timeless of course, but I never found real life to be that black and white. True-to-life heroes have faults and sometimes horrible character flaws, but if you can put them against someone who makes them look good by comparison, then they cease to be a typical anti-hero.

Both of your novels were originally self-published and are now released through Permuted Press. What was the purpose of this?

I self-published to get myself noticed, because I believed I could tell a story well enough to do that. It was a plan that ultimately paid off thanks to Permuted Press.

On Facebook, you’ve mentioned The Lineage a few times. Is this book three in your trilogy? If so, when do you expect to have it completed?

The Lineage will complete the trilogy and after a couple of years of taking notes and building the plot in my mind I finally started writing it last month. I hope to have it completed sometime in 2012.

Once you’ve completed your trilogy and its prequel, what projects do you have simmering on the back burners that readers can anxiously await?

I really want to do a horror-western comprised of several short stories, and I also have an enduring idea for a horror-comedy. That’s about all the details I can go into right now. They may have some tie-ins with the SLJ series.

Heart of Scars and Autobiography of a Werewolf Hunger are available as NookBooks. Will you be releasing all your novels in ebook format?

That’s entirely up to the publisher. I literally have nothing to do with that.

What has been your biggest setback as a writer in a popular genre?

Knock on wood, but I haven’t had any real setbacks. Sometimes I’ll get out of pocket for a few weeks and it’s tough to get back to writing again, but that’s about it so far.

Do you see yourself writing another werewolf trilogy, or will you branch into something else?

I may do more on werewolves, but once the trilogy and prequel are done, I’ll want to pursue other options first. I have a lot of potential novel ideas; it just depends on what I have the vision to write when it comes time to start.

About Brian P. Easton

The son of a Southern Illinois pastor, Brian Easton grew up a fan of classic horror films during the 70's. His favorite, as you might imagine, was The Wolfman.

"When I was a baby, my mother used to rock me while watching Dark Shadows. I cut my teeth on a steady diet of Creature Feature and Night Gallery, the old school Universal Monsters and spaghetti westerns. I started writing when I was ten, after I was given a hand-me-down Royal typewriter."

He has studied the occult since 1985 and obtained a degree in anthropology to further his research. His first novel When the Autumn Moon is Bright and his second novel Heart of Scars were finalists in the 2003 & 2008 Independent Publisher Book Awards.

"I'm a sucker for tragedy and anti-heroes. Even the most unscrupulous character can become the good guy when pitted against an evil greater than himself. Can you tell us about the releases you have with the Library of the Living Dead Press?

I have written a trilogy of books that are about the personal journey of one man during the zombie apocalypse. At the very beginning of the story, his entire family has turned into zombies and he is forced to deal with that, and the fact that everything else he has ever cared about is gone. So he decides that his only option is to cause as much mayhem with the undead as he possibly can before they destroy them. But it doesn’t take long for him to meet up with some other survivors that aren’t quite as interested in giving up just yet. Instead, they want to find a way to survive (and live) in a world dominated by the undead, and they need Jeff, the main character, to help them do that. The first book was released in July and is entitled Comes The Dark, the second book has just come out and is entitled Into The Dark, and the third book is being released in March of 2011 and is entitled Beyond The Dark.

I have also written quite a few short stories for both the Library and several other publishers, ranging from horror to science fiction to bizarro. I am enjoying having the chance to stretch my writing wings a bit with those different tales.

How do you research your books?

I actually sat down with some National Guardsmen and grilled them on several different aspects of how they would respond and react to different scenarios. I spent several hours grilling them about equipment, weapons, their personal perspectives and what their instincts would lead them to do if the world had turned upside down. That was just part of what I felt I needed to be able to write my book, and I was very grateful for the opportunity to tap into their expertise.

I would say that each story is different. Some require a bit of minor research online, while others, if you are going to show the material and the reader proper respect, you need to seek out experts on the subject matter you are bring up in your story. I will admit that there is always more research that can be done on any topic, but the trick, for me at least, is to not over indulge in saturating a story with too much irrelevant data. I may fire, reload, and even clean a handgun a character of mine will use in a story, but I doubt the reader needs all that detail in my story. There has to be a balance between knowing what you are talking about and not over-indulging in minutia that doesn’t move a story forward.

Tell us about your favorite character from one of your novels.

Well, it would seem that Jeff Blaine, the main character, would be the character I should speak about, but Jeff’s story is really laid out in the books fairly well. I believe the reader gets the chance to see how he morphs and changes over the course of the three books based on the horrendous circumstances he finds himself in. So I tend to really lean toward Megan as someone who the reader gets to know, but perhaps not quite as well as Jeff. She goes from being a virtual basket case when Jeff first meets her to someone who is getting “back to her normal self” as the story moves on. She realizes that she is happy to be alive, despite there being so many reasons not to be, and she has great depth and compassion for the people she cares about, while at the same time not being afraid to show her disgust and hatred for anyone who she despises. She is someone who, on the outside, looks like a complete wreck-she has lost a tremendous amount of weight, she is physically weak, and she looks ghostly and haunted. But on the inside, she is one of the most vibrant and strong people in the story. She is forced to do some terrible things, but she still has the capacity for love and acceptance despite living in a world that no longer seems to care about such concepts.

The start of Comes The Dark is one of the most intense I’ve ever read. How do you maintain the suspense without overloading it?

That is a tough question to answer. I don’t really think about that when I am writing or creating a story. It is more along the lines of seeing if what is happening makes sense. I let the characters breathe a bit when I write them. In other words, I might give them a certain personality at the outset, but I accept the fact that as things happen all around them and to them, their perspective and personality can and will morph, especially when we are talking about the apocalypse. So in many ways, the characters dictate how the story goes and how intense things will get. I might toss them into the meat grinder at first and may throw the occasional curve ball at them, but they are more than capable of creating their own mayhem through their actions and reactions, which makes the story all that much more intense and intriguing…or at least I hope.

What do you think it is about zombies that appeals to readers?

Zombies are the apocalypse, or the physical manifestation of it. Ever since Romero created the modern day zombie, they have been symbolic of a whole lot of our weaknesses and failings as human beings. The old adage that they are us and we are them isn’t really far from the heart of the matter in my humble opinion. It is the idea of the mindless horde coming for you, to consume you…and the fact that members of that horde might include your wife, your husband, your children, your parents… that makes them all the more compelling and disturbing. Zombies aren’t appealing or appetizing on any level, whereas monsters such as vampires and other dark creatures have a certain romantic allure. Zombies are foul, mindless, hungry, rotting corpses. They can’t be reasoned with, they have no real weaknesses, especially when there is a crowd of them coming for you, and they are the essence of inevitability. They can wait forever, patient beyond imagining, for you to give up, go mad, or starve to death. I don’t think it is ever a matter of believing that you can escape them, but knowing that sooner or later it will be your turn to be consumed at their hands and wondering how long you can last before they get to you.

Apart from your own work, what is your favorite zombie novel and what did you love about it?

I think there are several really compelling zombie books out there, and I have read a lot of them. So it’s hard to pick just one for me. The ones that really examine the human condition, such as Kim Paffenroth’s Dying To Live trilogy have been some of the most interesting to me. I love The Walking Dead graphic novels, because they show the lives of these people long after most books and movies would leave them behind-their saga just keeps going forward and we can see how everyone is coping not just days after the world has ended, but years after that. I have to give a nod to Max Brooks for bringing a lot of attention to the zombie genre with The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z as well - they are both great reads. But it is hard to stop there. I am a zombie book hound and love a lot of stuff out there-from the really gory, visceral stuff, to the more cerebral stories.

I’m on a personal crusade to find a book that really scares me. Is there a book you’ve read that scared you so badly you had to sleep with the light on?

I still love a lot of Stephen King’s classic stuff, like ‘Salem’s Lot, It, and The Shining…and there are several other books of his that were pretty disturbing for me. Ghost Story by Peter Straub knocked me over when I was kid too. Clive Barker is another author that tends to stick with me with the demonic worlds they create. I also love Lovecraft and the Cthulhu mythos he created for its ever-present aura of darkness and hopelessness that permeates most of those stories.

The tricky part about horror, at least in my estimation, is that it is a deeply personal experience. I have friends who are terrified of clowns and It still freaks them out to this day. When I was young, my fertile imagination often filled in the gaps on ghost stories and tales of monsters that you never really got a good look at and had to create in your own mind. Now, as a husband and father, stories that involve a family in danger actually stick with me more than anything. Perhaps they don’t make me leave the light on, but it is often hard to get back to sleep when I’ve read something that really rattles my cage about a father whose children die or have been stolen away from him. That feeling of helplessness scares me more than anything.

Has anyone or anything from your past influenced your writing?

I think there are a lot of experiences in my life that are constantly influencing my writing and what I will write in the future. The birth of my son, which was, in many ways, one of the most frightening and terror filled experiences in my life, because he was born so premature and barely survived his first few months of life, has impacted how I write and how I develop characters a great deal. People like my father, who grew up in a ghetto and yet was able to do so much for his family are people who have a profound influence on my writing and what I want to write about. Even all the jerks and oddballs I have met in my life give me a lot of ideas about what to write about.

I know this will probably will reveal my true inner-geek, but my experiences as a Dungeon Master in Dungeons and Dragons probably also shaped me as a writer a great deal. You get the chance to create a world and then plop several characters down into it. You give them an intense scenario and watch them react to it. Just like with writing, you have to constantly be flexible and let the story reveal itself as a Dungeon Master, or it feels wooden or forced and the players will let you know that. Learning how to improvise and adapt on the fly with those games had a definite influence on how I write and create situations for my characters to cope with.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers just embarking on the journey?

Read as much as you can, and not just in the genre you plan on writing in. Give yourself a diverse menu of books and stories to check out, from a lot of different authors. I have met a couple of people who have told me they want to become writers, yet they don’t read all that much. If you aren’t an avid reader, chances are you won’t be much of a writer.

It is okay to share what you write with friends and family, but you will need honest, almost heartless opinions about your work from people who are also writers and readers. In other words, network. Connect with folks who share a passion for the type of books you want to write and get writing partners; people who want to share their works with you and who are willing to look at yours. Grow a thick skin. You have to be able to handle criticism and embrace it. If you really believe you are all that good, then it is a good idea to have some folks who can help knock you down a notch or two. Because even if you are good, there is always a lot of room for improvement, and you need people who will tell you that honestly and constructively.

Can you share something about yourself not many people know?

I guess something that might surprise some folks is that I never thought of myself as a horror writer until I started writing Comes The Dark. I have been writing since I was a kid and almost all of it was fantasy and science fiction stories. I still love those genres and my intention is to write novels in those genres as well as horror in the future. This particular story grabbed a hold of me a few years ago and wouldn’t let go, and so I had to write it, but if it hadn’t, I may have never stepped into the horror arena. I am definitely glad it has happened, because I find that I really love writing horror a great deal. Since I started writing my trilogy, I have also written numerous horror short stories, along with some others in a variety of genres, including bizarro, erotica, high adventure, and plenty of others. It’s a lot of fun trying on different hats with my writing.

So it seems somewhat strange to me that I have found a home in the horror genre when none of my previous writing efforts to my first novel were horror related.

Which are your favorite television shows at the moment?

I guess it probably goes without saying that The Walking Dead is my new favorite show. I think that beyond the quality of the writing and storylines, it is great because it really gives some tremendous exposure to this genre to the public at large. And given that it has been rated the best new show on television by at least one magazine and it is breaking records for viewers, there is a strong interest in good quality zombie television out there that should help both the writers and fans of the genre get even more quality stuff out there.

Besides TWD, I would say that Netflix is my friend. I have been able to watch shows like Battlestar Galactica, Breaking Bad, True Blood, and Dexter that I never really got to see as they were airing. I do enjoy a few mindless comedies to go with the dramas I watch, but I find myself craving good writing and compelling characters more than anything on TV these days. A lot of TV is junk food for the mind, but there are some really good shows out there if you keep an eye out and I really am envious of the writers who create that stuff.

Sum up your writing style in one sentence or less.

I attempt to write from the heart, first and foremost.

Do you have any upcoming novels and/or works in progress you would like to share with us?

I have probably far too many ideas for novels brewing inside my head. I do love writing short stories as well and have more than a dozen that will be appearing in different anthologies over the next several months. I will be continuing to write short stories but I think the main project I am going to be devoting myself to over the next few months is another book that takes place in the same realm as my trilogy. I also plan on starting work on a Young Adult adventure novel that will be a complete one eighty from what I have been writing recently. We shall see how that turns out!

If you had to choose between being a werewolf and a vampire, which would you choose?

It is too easy to be a vampire. I need angst with my monsters. Vamps look like us, perhaps with a bit paler skin and pointier teeth, but they can get away with being vamps pretty easily in public. The ladies dig them and they have pretty much gone mainstream. I think being a werewolf could still easily mess with your mind, especially if you can’t remember what you have done under the control of the full moon. Not knowing if you have butchered innocent people would be torture. That would mess with my head enough to make being a werewolf a pretty interesting gig.

My pleasure.

Tell us about your novel Among the Living. Why did you set it in your home town of Seattle?

Among the Living is the story of a group of people caught up in the first few days of a zombie outbreak. I have often referred to the book as ‘pre-apocalyptic’. One of my favorite parts of zombie movies/books is the beginning. I love seeing how people react.

In my book, a group of dysfunctional people are swept up in the horror as the city descends into chaos. It is not a book about a single person walking across an apocalyptic wasteland. It is all about the events leading up to that.

I stayed away from everyday characters for the most part. One of the main characters is a twenty-something serial killer. Her viewpoint starts the day before the zombies arrive with her in a hotel room murdering a guy she met on Craigslist and then covering it up. When the zombies show up she is presented with a very unique gift. As one that has the need to take life, suddenly she can get away with it.

Another character is a drug dealer that prefers to stay in his home and smoke/drink the days away while shooting the dead that show up at his fence. He cracks one-liners while swilling rum and lusting after his girlfriend. One reviewer called it a dark zombie book with a few laugh out loud moments thanks to that character.

I picked Seattle, mainly the downtown area because I have lived and worked in the area for many years. Like they say, write what you know. Besides, everyone knows it is grey and rainy all the time. It’s the perfect place for a zombie book.

I would also like to mention that the version out now is a greatly revised and expanded version. I went back and added about 20 pages to it. It was also professionally edited by Stephanie Kincaid.

What inspired you to do The Zombie Wilson Diaries?

The Zombie Wilson Diaries was a funny little experiment I tried as a way to promote my first book Among the Living. Being on a small press is great. They pay large royalties and I get a lot of say in my work. The downside is that it takes a lot more promotion.

I was trying to come up with a way to get more readers to look at Among the Living so I decided to do a blog with an ongoing story and weekly entries. I was watching this movie called Survival Island one night. In the movie this ridiculously attractive woman is stuck on a deserted island with two guys that fight over her all the time. Oh yeah, and in the morning they all have perfect hair. So I got to thinking. What if the woman was a zombie. I bet the guys would be really frustrated. From that, I took a bit of Castaway (Zombie-Wilson instead of a volleyball?) and my love of satire. I blended it with the trials and tribulations of relationships and zombiefied the whole mess.

The blog got quite popular thanks to Doctor Pus of Library of the Living Dead. He started doing weekly readings of the diary entries. As time went by I had to set the character up with more and more outlandish situations including a beached zombie-shark.

The book really gave me a chance to do something I love which is pure satire. But I also threw in a bit of one sided romance. Let’s face it. The poor guy in the book just wants a companion, someone to share his life with. Someone to talk to. All she wants to do is eat him. Relationship satire? Yep, been accused of that one too.

What was your involvement with ZomBCon? How was the experience?

ZomBcon was a wonderful con held in Seattle. I was at the con as a vendor but I do that so I can setup my books and meet people. Sure selling books directly to folks is fun but it is even more gratifying to just sit around and chat with people who have the same love of the genre as I do. I chatted with one woman for about 10 minutes before I even mentioned I was the author of the books on the table. It’s just that much fun to meet other zombie nuts.

I did a book signing at the Barnes and Noble book pavilion which was a real blast. I also had a filmed interview for an upcoming zombie documentary which was quite surreal.

zomBcon was a great experience and I can’t wait for it to come back next year.

Of all the horror genres, why zombies?

Really, I blame Permuted Press. A few years ago I was at a Borders and saw, much to my surprise, a zombie book. It was Drop Dead Gorgeous by Wayne Simmons. I picked up the book and could not believe that not only was the book a zombie novel, it was by a small press dedicated to the genre. I picked up 3 books on the spot.

I was finishing writing classes at Gotham Writers Workshop and decided: “How hard could it be to write a zombie book?”

Well it turned out to be a hell of a lot harder than I thought. You really have to dig deep and think about the folks caught up in a zombie event. How would you act? What would you sacrifice? But I love the genre and plan to stick with it for a long time.

Besides, zombies offer so many ways to abuse them. Since zombies are people they can bring out the best, and worst, in the folks around them. Or they can just be the butt of a joke. They can be used for pure horror like being trapped in a room with tons of them pressing on the door, to girl zombies in coconut tops and grass skirts.

Plus, zombies don’t sparkle unless they are covered in shrapnel.

Tell us about your new zombie book Barriers Beyond.

Barriers Beyond is really the first 30,000 words of a much larger book. I have been working on the full book for over a year now and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. Hoping to take advantage of the huge Kindle community, I released the first third of the book as a novella. My friend, Lee Harnup, helped me with the cover and Stephanie Kincaid, editor extraordinaire, did the hard work on the book - taking my virtual chicken scratch, and making it readable.

I hope to have good new on the full book pretty soon. After that the novella will be pulled. A number of horror writers are seeing big sales numbers from doing monthly Novellas. I wanted to get in on the trend but have been too busy with other projects. I do have plans to release a zombie western at some point in the same format, called Bordello of the Dead.

The title is a bit off, so what would you say to someone in regards to reading The Apocalypse and Satan’s Glory Hole?

Oh, there is nothing off about the title . It is a rip-snorting journey across the apocalypse with the most insane cast of characters you will ever come across - all on their way to stop Satan from getting funky with a giant floating glory hole.

I wrote the book with a bizarro/horrorcore author named Jonathan Moon. We started out joking about doing a book together in the bizarro genre. What came out was an absurd journey we liken to an acid trip with words.

The four horsemen are completely reimaged. War looks like Dick Cheney. Famine is a foul mouthed Rosanne Barr wannabe. Death is kinda emo and hooks up with a dominatrix. Pestilence is a junkie that wants nothing more than a new fix.

Jesus and Death go on a vodka and red bull fueled road trip and get into all sorts of adventures.

There is also a one-armed, heroin addicted monkey named Phil who is the punch line of every chapter he appears in.

You can’t go wrong with this book. It is absurd, bizarre, gross, dirty, and the funniest thing I have ever worked on.

Is there a personal horror story that hides in every piece of your writing?

Not at all. I don’t really know where that stuff comes from. I do like telling the story of people caught up in horrible situations, to me that’s where real horror stems from.

What is your next upcoming project?

I have a trilogy of zombie novels in the works. The first one is done and is out to a publisher. The title is At The Behest of the Dead.

I plan to do a sequel to Zombie Wilson Diaries called My Live with Zombie-Wilson, a Memoir.

At some point I will also do a direct sequel to Among the Living called Among the Dead.

Do you see yourself expanding into “Mainstream” Publishing or do you prefer the personal touches of small press publishers?

I love small press but I’m not going to slam the door on a major publisher showing up at my door with a wheelbarrow full of cash. The dream of every writer is for mainstream appeal and I am no different.

The ever classic: Where do you see your writing in ten years? (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Wow. I really can’t say. I have been a huge fan
of epic fantasy since I was a kid. I would love to do a series of books in the genre. The problem I run into is that I hate all the standard fantasy clichés and troupes. I would want it to be different so I might have to resort to satire.

What is your thing with hula-girl dolls?

There is a chapter in Zombie Wilson Diaries which has the protagonist dressing up his pet zombie in a coconut bra and grass skirt. Well, Rhiannon Frater (As the World Dies trilogy) became a fan of the story and joked about the coconut bra. Then accused me of zombie abuse. Now I carry hula dolls to the cons I attend and set them up in front of a bloody Wilson volleyball.

You’ve stated that you are a “recovering” Science fiction writer and that you are taking pills for it. Care to comment further?

When I took writing classes a few years ago I focused almost exclusively on Sci-Fi and fantasy. The problem is that when I write the serious stuff it tends to have a nourish feel to it. This really didn’t sit well with the sci-fi I was doing. I’m not abandoning it, though, I would love to do a high tech, hyper-violent science fiction zombie story someday.

How can readers, fans, stalkers, and curiosity seekers find and/or contact you?

Thank you for joining me today, Iain. Before we begin, can you tell us about your first Permuted Press novel, Domain of the Dead?

My pleasure. Domain of the Dead is a traditional Romero inspired zombie novel. We have a group of survivors held up in a warehouse penned in buy thousands of undead. One day they spot a helicopter on the horizon but is this the salvation they've all been hoping for? I wrote the zombie story I'd like to read, one where the world has already been over run, one where man was in the minority and one where the zombies are dumb and shambling and ravenous.

How do you research your books?

With Domain of the Dead and Remains of the Dead it was decades of fearing zombies. Whenever I heard something that fit my view of how zombies would work I stored that away. There is a lot of in-depth research I also do other than the things I just stumble upon. If I don't know how something works I'll look it up, but if I can find someone who knows first hand I go and interview them. For example, with Domain Of The Dead I knew nothing about ships. I was able to sit down with an ex-merchant seaman and quiz him about the details of life at sea. He was able to fill in lots of the blanks for me and give me details I'd never have found out from simply reading a book.

In Domain of the Dead your characters are trapped in a building with dwindling supplies leaving them no choice but to face the zombie horde in order to survive. Are these insurmountable odds part of what draws readers and writers to zombie fiction?

I don't think it is. It brings a level of peril to the narrative and makes for a more exciting read. The danger is you have too many insurmountable problems and if you don't set up the mechanism for the characters to triumph the story becomes unbelievable and you lose the reader. It's great when a character gets out of a situation in a way you hadn't anticipated as long as the means for that escape were already known to the reader. But for them to be plucked from danger by a deus ex machina belittles the intelligence of the reader.

I think most people when they get involved in a book want to empathize and identify with the characters. For the most part they want to be asked what would they do in this situation? If you can deliver that I think it hooks people in regardless of genre.

Tell us about your favorite character from one of your novels.

That's a hard question. At the end of the day every character an author writes (no mater how well observed) is ultimately a facet of the author. Every character is just a reflection of the writer’s own mind. So all the characters are fragments of me. The ones you like are ones you aspire to be and the nasty ones represent the darker side of yourself.

As a writer I like the zombies. They're simple. They have very few motives and there's no duplicity in their nature. All they want to do is eat human flesh and they're dumb so it's real easy to get into their mind set.

Apart from your own work, what is your favorite Permuted Press novel and what did you love about it?

Now that's going to put me in a trick situation. I was so excited to be offered a contract with Permuted Press as there were so many fantastic authors I love and admire with them already. The first Permuted title I read was The Undead anthology. The whole thing was chock full of great zombie stories but the story that sticks with me was David Moody’s. I know David isn't a Permuted Author but I'm a huge fan of his work he has such a talent for writing about the ordinary in an engaging way. The other two stand out novels for me are Day By Day Armageddon and Twilight of the Dead. Both these books I bought before they were snapped up by Permuted Press, so I'm proud that I had the foresight to buy these and also flattered that I've followed a similar route. Both those novels filled a gap for me. When there was very little good traditional shambling zombie stuff around they all quenched my thirst.

As a New Zealander I was excited to learn the sequel to Domain of the Dead takes place on Stewart Island. What made you choose New Zealand for this story?

Sorry to disappoint you but Remains of the Dead doesn't take place on Stewart Island. I make a reference to it as base of operations but it's not a location the characters have been to. I also mention Nelson which I believe you have a connection with. I've tried in The Domain series not to tie things down to one place. It's great when you're reading a book and somewhere you know is mentioned but most of the time that kind of thing excludes you. I wanted to strip that out so that you could believe the action was taking place in your own home town. When I mention place names I've tried to choose ones that are generic, places that have counterparts all over the globe. I chose Nelson as a place a name as there are number of small towns called Nelson all around the English speaking world.

But as a New Zealander you'll be pleased to hear the south island has the best chance to overcome the zombie apocalypse. It has a relatively low population while still having a good level of industrialization and good infrastructure. In my scenario although New Zealand has been overrun it presents the best chance for re-colonization – the details of which are in Remains of the Dead.

I’m on a personal crusade to find a book that really scares me. Is there a book you’ve read that scared you so badly you had to sleep with the light on?

Nope. Sorry but I’ve never read a horror that scared me. Yeah there have been creepy moments or things that made me feel sick but nothing I couldn’t switch off from. Romero’s early zombie movies and 28 days later all gave me horrific nightmares but I’ve never had a book do the same. It may be because I’m a slow reader. I’m Dyslexic so I have the reading speed of a fourteen-year-old (I know I’ve been tested). That means it takes me a few days to read a book and I guess that gives me time to escape the horror. But up until recently a zombie movie would have me terrified for days on end, maybe because it would all go in such a short space of time. The real horror though isn’t what people like me write its what’s actually happening. I try to put a message into my writing and hope that in some way I’m contributing the positive in the world.

Has anyone or anything from your past influenced your writing?

Yes. There are lots to people I can thank for being a writer. There are the people who were a positive influence on me, encouraging me or helping me. I include their names in the acknowledgments of my books and I owe my success as a writer to their help. I hope that they know how much they mean to me and how much I appreciate their support.
There are people and events in life that shape who you are. Some are positive experiences some are negative. I think we’re shaped as much by the negative as we are the positive. I haven’t had a hard life, I don’t have a big sob story to tell but like everyone I’ve had my share of heartbreak and rejection, failure and regret. I think it’s important to draw on those and use them as a strength rather than a weakness.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers just embarking on the journey?

Write. That’s the biggest advice, just sit down and write. If you can write just one page a day you’ll have a novel by the end of the year. It’s as simple as that. People often say but how do I write well? I don’t know, but I do know if you don’t practice and put the effort in you’ll never learn. Olympic athletes don’t just turn up on the day and race. Writers write.

The other thing I’ve found is you can’t write in isolation. You need someone (or some people) you can trust to read your work and pull it apart. I have a few fantastic friends who read my work and critique it. They’re close enough that they can say what they think and articulate enough that they can frame it in a constructive way. Much of the time I miss out important details that I’ve skipped over and my Muses (as I like to call them) point these out and get me to bring out the best in my work. As a writer if you can find people like that they’re worth their weight in gold.

Can you share something about yourself not many people know?

The one thing (I think I’ll be saying forever) is I’m not a horror writer. I’m a Sci-Fi author who’s just very twisted.

Fast paced and visual.

Do you have any upcoming novels and/or works in progress you’d like to share with us?

As you know Remains of the Dead is almost finished. I have one draft to finish then it’s off to Permuted Press for their approval. There may be some work once they’ve read it but I’m hopeful we’ll see it in print summer 2011. I hate to call it a sequel to Domain of the Dead, it’s technically a concurrent story. It follows the people left behind in chapter one of Domain of the Dead and follows the same time line.

Once Remains is out of the way I have an occult thriller that I started last year but didn’t finish. I’d like to see if I can get back into that. It was causing a few headaches that I think I’ve ironed out now. I’ve also got a few Sci-Fi books either finished or in the planning stages.

But it’s all in the air at the moment, the priority is Remains of the Dead and then I’ll see where things take me.

If you could be a supernatural creature what would it be?

Nice question but I can’t tell you. My occult thriller has a supernatural being at the center of it. I think I’d like to be one of those (it would be fun for a few centuries). Not much of an answer I know but as an author you need to keep hold of your ideas until they’re in print.

Iain Mckinnon was born in Scotland in the early seventies and lived a happy well balanced childhood, with the exception of being forced to wear flares and the 1978 World Cup.

Aged 18 he saw George A Romero's Day of the Dead and from then on zombies crowned his list of irrational fears.

In 2005 he wrote the screen play for the 10 minute zombie film The Dead Walk in an attempt to confront his fear and get a restful night's sleep.

Unfortunately although his plan worked and he lost his fear of the undead at the same time his wife gave birth to their son and he hasn’t had a good night's sleep since.

Iain currently lives and writes from his home just outside Edinburgh. At the moment he only has one irrational fear but he does still keep a survival kit and crowbar close at hand just in case.

Time travel.

It's the ultimate impossible dream: the ability to step through a doorway into tomorrow or yesterday, seeing all the unknown wonders of the future—or correcting the awful mistakes of the past.

It can't happen, of course. Oh, but what if?...

And what if something went terribly, irreparably wrong?

Times of Trouble, a new anthology of original speculative fiction from Permuted Press, is looking for grim, gritty stories about the unhappy unintended consequences of mucking about with the delicate fabric of reality. That doesn't mean there's no room for any note of hope, or the occasional happy ending—in fact, accomplishing such a feat effectively just might greatly enhance the author's chance of inclusion in this anthology—but the emphasis here is decidedly on the dark downside of time travel.

Times of Trouble most emphatically does not want to see any stories of clichéd wish fulfillment—don't bother submitting any stories in which Hitler is fortuitously killed prior to World War II—or those using time travel as a convenient plot device to place the protagonist "elsewhen" simply for the sake of a rousing adventure. (The Editor has nothing whatsoever against a good romp with Tyrannosaurs, but the place for such is not here.) Time travel must be integral to development of the story.

Unless crucial to the plot, it is not necessary to expound at length on the actual mechanism of time travel. The "how" should be far less important than "what happens next?"

Examples of the sort of stories that will succeed in this anthology are "—All You Zombies—" by Robert A. Heinlein, "A Sound of Thunder," by Ray Bradbury (oh, look—you can use dinosaurs, if you do it right), and the classic Star Trek™ episode, "The City on the Edge of Forever."

Submissions open April 04, 2010 and close July 04, 2010, for stories of 3000 to 7500 words, and should be emailed to timetraveler@permutedpress.com attached as a .doc (preferred) or .rtf file in Standard Manuscript Format (as described—with many worthwhile pointers—at either http://www.sfwa.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/Mssprep.pdf or http://www.shunn.net/format/story.html, both of which are fine examples for the writer). Submissions that fail to at least make an attempt to follow formatting guidelines will be rejected unread (but may be resubmitted in proper format).

Multiple submissions are not permitted, but authors whose attempts are rejected are not prohibited from making another effort. Simultaneous submissions are strongly frowned upon.

Payment will be US $.01/word for first worldwide print and eBook rights, payable on finalization by the Editor of the completed Table of Contents and issuance of a contract by the Publisher.

My most terrifying experience reading a novel was when I opened my copy of White Fang and a dead spider fell out.

I've always felt like that's what a good horror novel should do. That is what I told Jacob at Permuted Press when it came time to put John Dies at the End into print a couple of years ago. My idea was to rig each copy with a plastic spider that would jump out at the reader when they opened page 42. It was as simple as cutting a compartment into the middle pages and rigging some kind of spring mechanism.

This idea was rejected very quickly (too quickly for it to have been properly considered, I felt) due to the costs of cutting into and inserting the spiders during the printing process. I spent several months searching for a workable alternative, and found a place that for a reasonable price would supply us with thousands of spider eggs. These could simply be tossed in between the pages and by the time the book reached readers' hands, they would be ready to spill dozens of live spiders on them, which I felt would be even more effective than the plastic ones.

My calls on the subject were not returned, and by this point the book was already for sale and we didn't want to create a situation where customers were storming the counter at Borders, demanding refunds in exchange for spidered copies of the book.

It was at this point that horror legend Don Coscarelli approached us, having heard rumors and wishing to purchase the film rights for "that book where the spider jumps on you". By the time he realized the truth, the ink was already dry.

Then along came St. Martin's Press, who picked up the rights to republish John Dies at the End around the globe on September 29th of this very year. On Day One we drew up plans to have each copy actually project a holographic spider onto the reader's chest, using a complex system of low-powered lasers to simulate a "bite" from the spider by burning two pinprick-sized holes into the victim's skin.

We did have to scale that down due to the costs, as my new editor at St. Martin's said that something equivalent could be created by simply DESCRIBING a spider jumping out at the reader. I was dubious, and we compromised by adding a one-page interlude on page 204 (between the scene about the guy who explodes and the scene where the dog explodes) featuring a drawing of a spider, with some motion lines behind it. It was then removed during the first round of edits.

They did throw me a bone and let me write some new material that expands the John Dies at the End universe (that is, a fifth scene where somebody explodes) so it would be a rewarding experience even for those who read the Permuted edition. Publisher's Weekly give it a great review (though, ahem, noted the lack of spiders) and Don Coscarelli is busy negotiating with studios about the cost of staffing each showing of a JDatE film with a crew of guys who would fling buckets full of plastic spiders at the audience every five minutes or so.

So what I'm saying is the book goes on sale on September 29th, and I have some pretty serious outstanding debts to the spider egg wholesalers. So it'd be great if you could buy a copy. Thanks.
